The First Genre: A Short Story

The Forest

Far from the city, there was a small village surrounded by forest. The village isolated from society, not too many people lived there. Whenever conversations arose about the village, it always seemed something was pinching them in their back to stop. People were scared to go there; some people say that the forest is haunted and cursed. There are rumors that the forest and the village belong to Mr. Rahim. Mr. Rahim was an old person who used to live in the city but after an incident, he moves to the village. He is the oldest among the villagers and almost all of the villagers are old and are abandoned by their loved ones who moved to the city in concern of their future. A bunch of old folks living in the middle of the woods- this would often disturb people. But the story is different for Mr. Rahim he is the only person who has communication between the city and the village. He is responsible for bringing resources to the village. He also has three grandchildren Alex and his sisters Amy and tina who come to visit him once in a year and they were the only people who come from the city. Their parents do allow that but they come anyway. They are old enough to travel alone and most of the time they lie to their parents. Mr. Rahim loves his family but refuses to go back, no one knows why. Whenever his grandchildren would ask him, he won’t tell anything. But he is not alone in the village, the villagers are his family he says to his grandchildren that he can’t leave them, he is the only hope they have. His grandchildren don’t believe that and think there is more than that.

Near Mr.Rahim’s house, there are always animals, but whenever his grandchild comes they disappear. No one knows why except Mr. Rahim. Alex and his sister came to visit him during summer seasons but something happened this summer Mr. Rahim doesn’t want them to come. That rose suspicion in Alex’s mind, he wants to know the mystery of the forest. He is a stubborn guy he won’t let go until he knows the real story. So they went there without telling their parents and grandpa. But when they get there they can’t believe their eyes what they’re seeing, all the animals and birds in the center of the village, they never saw anything like this. Some of the animals are unfamiliar to them. Amy figures that these animals must be rare and going extinct. But it seems that the villagers are using this situation. Mr. Rahim is surprised seeing Alex and his sister and start stirring talking them. Alex questions his grandpa “what is happening here? Why there is all the animal? Is this the reason you don’t want us to here. Mr. Rahim remains in silent did not answer any questions. One villager came to Alex and told them “you guys must be tired go take rest you can talk to him later”. Alex refuses, but his sister drags him to the room to cool down the sheet. He is not alone, his sisters are confused and can not comprehend what’s happening. Later that night everyone gathers around the campfire. Mr. Rahim calls his grandchildren to come out of the room he wants to talk to them.

Mr. Rahim wants to tell them a story of his life, he said “I know three of you have some questions in your mind seeing everything today. I did not want you guys to find out about this, that why I told you not to come. But I think it’s time, you guys are old enough know about it. The forest and village belong to my family for generations, my grandfather also used to live here. We moved to the city before I was born but when I become your age, I used to come here to visit him as you guys do. I also had the same kind of question in my mind, I also wanted to learn about the secret of this forest, who won’t everything so mysterious in here. My grandfather lived a long life and he died without any sickness. I used to think that the forest is special and kept him alive for a long time but learn the truth in a hard way. My father never came here like your parents and I don’t blame them, no normal person would want to live here. This forest is home to hundreds of rare species of animals, you can not find them anywhere else in the world. Whenever there is disturbance in the forest the animals gather in the village, we are used to it” Alex replies “that why I did not recognize them” and Mr, Rahim continues “Everything was fine until my father learn that an industrialist wants to buy the village so he can make a factories in this area. The location was ideal for they’re illegal business and nearby lakes can supply them an endless source of water that need for the factories. If the factory build here the entire ecosystem would be affected.” Amy asks “but the village is not so bigs how could they build a factory here and the lakes are also far from here ” Mr. Rahim replied, “they don’t the village they want the forest but they can do anything if there are people around. My father did not know about it so he sold the property to the industrialist. When my grandfather finds out he was really angry about this and wanted to kill him. But thankfully my father did not close the deal without asking grandpa. But the industrialist wanted this place and do anything to get it. They start to threaten him that if he does not back off they would kill him. My grandfather did not take it seriously. One day they send hunters in the forest saying that there is a dangerous animal that could be harmful to humans. And they shot him when he was in the forest and said it was an accident. Your father was a kid during that time so I could not do anything about it. I had to protect them, so I came here after your father took over the family business. Now, these people are after me because I file a case against the company that they are the murderer of my grandfather over this land.” Alex says “ they might want to harm you too” Mr. Rahim replies “ don’t worry, they won’t do anything to me because then the suspicion and would go straight to them. So that’s it for the day now go to sleep” Alex and his sister say together “that horrible, who would do that” Mr. Rahim replies “ there are a lot of people in the world who would do anything for money” everybody confused and can’t believe what they are hearing and Alex asks Mr. Rahim “why risk your life why can’t just give them the forest ?

Mr. Rahim replies, “ It’s not about me, it’s about saving the forest and its ecosystem. The forests are essential for our life, forest removes pollution from the air and makes the air breathable. Forests remove CO2 from the air and store it. As you guys know that Global Warming is caused by higher CO2 levels in the air. Loss of forest contributes to 12 to 17 percent of annual greenhouse gas emissions. And we are cutting down 20 football filed worth of forest every second. Forest also influences local weather, reduces local flood and mudslide. Forest is home to thousands of animals, how would you feel if somebody comes and destroy your home. Animals are going extinct because of loss of habitat. We only care about ourselves and kill thousands of animals without any reason. We set fire in the forest and call it a naturally caused wildfire. We all know this but no one does anything, everyone thinks what they gonna do alone. And they are not wrong because this is a big issue we need everyone to come together and do something about it. That why I have so many friends in this forest to protect this forest we make sure that no one does anything illegally.” Alex said “there are other ways to protect the forest, you don’t have to risk your life staying here” Mr. Rahim replies “ Yes I know, but those are complicated and take time. If I leave then they would have the chance to take over the forest. I have spent my entire life saving this forest, this my home now I can’t leave.” Alex says “ I will tall dad everything about it and try to persuade him to do something about it.” Mr. Rahim says “you might think that your parents abundant me but in reality, I am the person who abundant you guys. Your father is helping with the legal stuff, but he did not want you guys to get involved. Anyways it getting late you guys should go to bad and three of you will leave tomorrow because things are not so safe around here. They won’t hurt me but you guys are at risk.”

Next day Alex and his sister leave but they have a plan to solve this problem. Alex and Amy are college students. Both of them and their friends create a student group to fight this matter. They start a movement against the industrialist to stop their approach of destroying the forest. They start posting on social media to increase their influence over the court decision. Their movement took popularity and people start to come out on this matter. And they were successful, people listen to them and more and more start complaining against the businessmen who turn out have done so many illegal activities including illegal meat production the Amazon forest. The court ruled against the businessman and made the forest a preserved national forest, relieving their grandfather from life-threatening duty and come back home and other villagers to their family. We can do anything if want to. Waiting for someone else to take the first step would not solve the problem because the other person also thinking they are alone. Barke the cycle to be the first one to do something.

The Second Genre: Request letter

Dear Governor,

On behalf of our community, I am Mr. Rahim reaching you with a request to oversee the problem of deforestation in our community. The growing problem of deforestation is going out of our hands. The cattle ranchers driving their cattle into the forest destroying the newly planted trees that were planted by the local citizen. They are also cutting down trees and setting fires in the forest to clear land for their cattle ranch. The Oil company also wants to build a new oil plant near the forest and possibly destroying the part of the forest. this cause can increase the concentration of CO2 in this area and increasing the local temperature as well as Global temperature. If we don’t take any action the problem would out of control. I have some possible solutions that would control the existence problem of deforestation.

  • First solution: Creating and enforcing laws that would prevent future destruction of the forest. Here some ideas for possible laws
    • All forests are protected by the government.
    • Any destruction of the forest without government consent is unlawful.
    • Cutting trees in the protected land would consider a crime against nature.
    • Hunting animals is also considered a crime against nature.
  • Second solution: Creating an organization that would oversee the protection laws as well as enforces these laws.
  • Third solution: Increasing public awareness by doing frequent meetings about the environment to encourage people to plant trees. Adding environmental education in the education system.
  • Fourth solution:  Not giving permissions to big companies that want to use forest land for economical purposes. It might be beneficial in present-day but harmful for the future.

These are some possible suggestions and there are many other ways to stop deforestation and save the plant. These might be small solutions but can have big impacts.  Most countries in the world do not any strick rules against deforestation but you can be the first person to take a step and be the bigger person. It is your duty to serve the community and make the change. Taking responsibility is a big move for your government and will make great imprecation of you.

Sincerely,

Citizen of the community,

Mr. Rahim.

The First Genre: The Short Story (rationale)

The purpose of the short story is to deliver the message about deforestation educate people about nature and showing that you can the person who is willing to do anything to protect the forest and another person willing to destroy it.  The story is about a man named Mr. Rahim who live in a village far from the city and have little to no connection with the city. The village Belong to Mr. Rahim. Villagers and Mr. Rahim are the protectors of the forest from an industrialist who wants to build a factory, destroying the forest and its ecosystem. Some of the animals of the forest are rare or going extinct animals.

The main idea of the story encourages people to fight for nature because at the end of the day we are connected to mother nature and no one can deny that. But some people think they can take whatever they want and nothing will stop them. Working together we can achieve anything.

There is no specific audience for this story but the end is targeted toward young adults that we can make a difference, it might not be as simple as a portrait in the story but it is possible. And the main characters of the story are both young and old. Showcasing that the old generation should show us the path of doing something different but the majority of adults in our society are the cause of this problem.

The language used for this story also formal English and any educational background people can understand it. I wanted to make it personal to the audience, so they feel that it is their responsivity to do something about it.

The median for this could be a newspaper, social media, or storybook. and the stane of this story is supporting the forest.

The tone of the story information, curious, and upsetting because Mr. Rahim is informing his grandchildren about nature, like our grandparents tall us stories of their childhood. And the grandchildren are curious to learn secret.

The Second Genre: A Request Letter (rationale)

The purpose of the latter is to inform the local government about the situation and remind them that we also keep track of our society and we know what is good for the community.  This latter also a suggestion of the solution for deforestation and a brief explanation of the major causes and effects of deforestation. I did not go deep in the cause and effects because as a government official he/she should know about this stuff. I also mentation that how it can be beneficial for his government and make him a bigger person who took the first step in the world. The community discussed in the latter was completely imaginary.

The target audience for this latter is government officials. but I did not specify any government in the world because of almost all the countries have deforestation or environment rated problems. The letter can be sent to any government to give the idea for the laws that clearly don’t have or deny to do something about this matter. But unfortunately, no country in the world has any strick environmental law.

The language of this Letter is formal language, reasonable and specific. I tried to be educated and sophisticated so they went take me lightly. The idea was to make them realize their duty and serve the community without any hesitation. the tone of the latter is informative and reasoning, my goal is to get in touch with the government and persuade them to take a step to protect the environment.

The median of the letter is the email, or postal service and can post on social media to raise awareness and support. The stane of the letter is pro-environment and against industrialist who destroys the forest.
